Video Games: Loving Every Minute of It

Video games play a larger role in people’s lives than one would like to think. The opening day sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 exceeded $310 million in the US, UK, and Canada alone (Grant 202), such large sales numbers demand the attention of the general public. Video games have evolved from arcade games and home consoles such as the Wii, Xbox360 and PS3.  Games are now mobile, you can play a game anywhere on most cell phones. This type of evolution of games has brought them to masses with resounding success. With over 100,000 apps in the Android market and over 350,000 in the Apple’s app store, game developers both large and small want you to spend your $2.99 for their time killer game app. So far the, the general public is clicking the “buy” button.

  1. Video games are not just for the niche crowd anymore, Kobe Bryant does commercials for call of duty, and Kobe Bryant is as big a star in the United States as anyone. Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare used Eminem's songs in their trailers, ran during the NBA finals, and Modern Warfare 3 will most likely break all records..again.

  2. I'm what is commonly referred to as a "video game widow." Every time a new game is released, I don't have a boyfriend for a few days. Right now, Portal 2 is the new object of his affections. I myself haven't played many of the new video games (Batman aside, Arkham Asylum is one of my absolute favorites.
I'm really stoked for Arkham City!), I'm more of a N64 kind of person. I suppose I would be considered a laggard in that department.

  3. I have played video games since the day I can remember. Starting way back with the SEGA Master System. Games have always catered to a certain stereotypical audience until recently. The 360 and PS3 have become the powerhouses of modern gaming; but I credit the Wii for doing something that changed the way the public sees games. The Wii made it “cool” to play games with your friends and family. The Wii is what pushed games into the mainstream. Recent games of become so immersive I would rather be told a story through the video game medium than film.

  4. From the time I can remember I always played video games, but for a short period I stopped. However, I recently bought a new Xbox and I pretty much live for it now. Video game companies are definitely continue to improve on their work and finding games and game systems for just about anyone today.

  5. I have been playing video games since I was about 5 years old. I started off playing Nintendo, Sega, Playstation, and etc. Video games can be addicting and very much time consuming exactly how Professor Mahood said during lecture. I tried to retire from playing video games but I had to play Call of Duty, NFL Madden, and NCAA Football. I love sports and fighting games. My favorite mobile game was Snake on the Nokia cell phones.

  6. I wasn't allowed to play video games when I was younger. Not because my parents wouldn't let me, but because they believed that if I was going to play that I should be able to reserve my seat at the control. My brother never let me play because, well, he's a turd and the boys in neighborhood wouldn't let me play because I am a girl... and because they're turds too. I guess that once I was able to get my paws on a gaming console I went crazy. That was 7 years ago. Now, well not right now as apple has made it impossible to play on my mac anymore, I play for hours on end and my parents hate it. But, I guess it helps socially as well, I don't want to call it a clan, because it's not, but our group has been playing together for years. Sure it's weird playing with someone who lives clear across the world and calling them 'friend' but friendships aren't just made face-to-face anymore and I think that's an awesome step for technology.
